The second most serious food-borne illness outbreak ever in the USA involving whole, raw foods and vegetables have led to 28 deaths and hundreds of illnesses in the USA. The alleged cause: eating Listeria Monocytogenes-Tainted Cantaloupe. Several injury claims have been filed against a Colorado grower, distributors and grocery stores.
Listeriosis is a rare bacterial infection marked by fly-like symptoms. It primarily affects people with compromised immune systems, such as older adults, pregnant women and infants and it can be fatal.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expects reports of increased illnesses, even though the Rocky-Ford branch cantaloupe was recalled from stores in the USA in September 2011. It can take up to two months after eating food contaminated with Listeria for someone to become ill.
An FDA investigation concluded that the cantaloupe were likely to have become contaminated with Listeria in a packing facility where they were washed, packaged and stored before distribution. Listeria thrives in cool and damp conditions.
