An important decision has been made by Prague District Court which has ruled that a number of Czech owners of Skoda and Volkswagen cars qualify for $23 million dollars in compensation linked to Volkswagens diesel emission scandal.
The law suit was filed by Safe Diesel on behalf of two and a half thousand people and is one of the first judgements in favour of car owners affected by the diesel scandal.
Volkswagen admitted in September 2015 that it had cheated US diesel emissions tests and the company has already paid out billions of dollars in penalties and compensation to car owners in America. Moloney Solicitors are acting on behalf of a number of owners of Skoda and Volkswagen cars which were affected by the emissions cheat device. Litigation is currently ongoing on behalf of the car owners in the Republic of Ireland to obtain compensation for the breach of contract and misrepresentation.
Speaking about this ruling Liam Moloney solicitor said today “this is an extremely important decision and again confirms the independence of a number of European Courts who have not been afraid to stand up for the rights of consumers. There are nearly one hundred thousand consumers affected by this scandal in Ireland who in my view should be entitled to similar compensation. “
He added “Volkswagen have already compensated affected motorists in the United States and have admitted that they deliberately installed these “cheat devices” to mis-lead regulators and consumers alike”. He added “it is completely unacceptable that the Irish environmental protection agency has not investigated this scandal and has failed in its regulatory duties to protect Irish consumers”.
