Thousands of Irish people worked in coal, lead and zinc mines. Unfortunately, many of them went on to develop serious health complications and injuries that were caused as a result of poor working conditions and work systems.
These include the following:
- Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis
- CWP
- Chronic Bronchitis
- Chronic Pulmonary Disease
- Silicosis
- Industrial Asthma
- Tinnitus
- Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease
- Chronic Air Flow Limitation
- Emphysema
- Vibration White Finger
Many of these conditions were directly related to miner’s inhalation of coal dust. Under Irish Legislation to include the Mines and Quarries Act 1965 the State was the licensor of all coal mines in Ireland. It specifically had inspectorate, policing and enforcement obligations to ensure that the Mines were being operated safely.
In many cases there were multiple breaches of Statutory Duties and Negligence on the part of companies operating the mines that caused such injuries.
Some miners also developed knee osteoarthritis resulting from repeated minor trips, stumbles, falls and knocks and while working and crawling on their knees.
Some of the most significant mines were in Castlecomer and Galmoy, Co. Kilkenny, Navan Co. Meath, Lisheen Co. Monaghan, Ballingarry, the Silvermines and Slieveardagh in Co. Tipperary and Avoca in Co. Wicklow.
