Dangers Experienced by Bin Collectors Highlighted as Injured Employee is awarded €253,678.00
The High Court awarded €253,678 to a bin collector who is employed by Wexford County Council, after he suffered head and chest injuries and a collapsed lung when he was hit by a car and crushed against the back of his bin lorry. The accident happened in October 2010 while the bin man was collecting bins in a village in Wexford.
The bin collector took an action against the driver of the car and liability was admitted by him. The case therefore went to Court as an assessment of damages only. Assessing damages at €253,978.00 Ms Justice Finlay Geoghegan described the accident as traumatic and life changing one which would have an effect on the employees ability to carry out heavy manual work in to the future.
The employee also suffered broken ribs, dislocated finger, an injury to his right knee and a fractured fibula. Six of his teeth were also broken and as well as his physical injuries he suffered from post-traumatic stress, depression and a sleep disorder.
The case again highlights the occupational risks to workers in the waste disposal industry.
