Thousands of women have been injured by the insertion of trans-vaginal mesh implants. The mesh device is implanted beneath the mid-portion of a patient’s urethra and forms a sling designed to keep the urethra in place so it does not press on the bladder when someone coughs, sneezes, exercises or strains in other ways.
In some cases patients experienced pain in the pelvic region and this was caused by the mesh eroding into surrounding tissues. If that happens permanent nerve damage can be caused from the device even though corrective surgery can be done to remove pieces of the mesh further surgery can be required. There is also the risk of permanent, constant pelvic and vaginal pain.
Thousands of claims have been lodged against Ethicon Inc. one of the manufacturers of this device and it’s parent company Johnson & Johnson. These claims have alleged that the device was defective and negligently designed in that the mesh was made of polypropylene which is not safe for use in the human body.
