A medical device alert has been issued by the medicines and health products regulatory agency in the UK in relation to Sunrise Medical Swing Away Manual Wheelchairs. The problem with the wheelchairs is that the upper frame tubes that support the backrest can fail during use, leading to a fall for the user or the carer. A Field Safety Notice was issued by the manufacturer in February 2011 but this has been unable to tract all end users.
All those involved in the provision and maintenance of these wheelchairs have been advised about the medical device alert and have been requested to contact Sunrise, the manufacturer, to obtain upgraded kits.
