The Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency in the UK has issued a medical device alert for a Roma chair Anti Microbial Commode manufactured by Roma Medical Aids Ltd. The Manufacturer has been made aware of an incident where an arm became detached from the chair causing the user to fall. It is possible the arm became detached due to being incorrectly fitted. The arm becoming detached during use could lead to injury to a user. To overcome this problem Roma Medical has updated the user manuals to clarify the fitting procedure and developed arm rests which will prevent incorrect fittings. The company issued an urgent field safety notice on the 2nd March 2011.
The MHRA has requested action by all those involved in the maintenance and use of these chairs. In particular, equipment store managers, nursing and residential care home managers, nurses, occupational therapists, care staff, maintenance staff and contractors have been advised to ensure that relevant members of staff are aware of the problem.
