More than 60 adverse reactions to the cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil, which is used in the State’s National Immunisation Programme have been reported to the Irish Medicines Board.
Gardasil was approved in 2006 to prevent certain strains of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in males and females between the ages of 9 and 26. However, Gardasil has been linked to a number of serious side effects. More than 8,000 complaints of Gardasil side effects have been reported with as many as 52 deaths among the reports.
The following are among the alleged Gardasil problems experienced by those injected by the HPV vaccine:
- Seizures
- Paralysis
- Coma
- Bells palsy
- Blood clots
- Anaphylactic shock
- Death.
The European Medicines Agency however has confirmed that Gardasil is considered to be safe and effective and “its benefits continue to outweigh its risks”. The IMB has stated that the majority of the adverse reactions reported were expected ones such as injection site reactions, headaches, fatigue, fainting, panic attacks and allergic-type reactions.
The use of Gardasil however has been ceased in Spain and there are ongoing concerns about its potential to cause serious side effects.
