Prison officers at a Dublin prison who tested positive for latent Tuberculosis (TB) are to get chest x-rays and lung tests. One prison officer is in a serious condition in hospital after contracting TB from an inmate at Cloverhill Prison while another thirty officers have tested positive for exposure.
Patients with latent TB are not infectious and it is not possible to get active TB from someone with latent TB. The main risk experts have said is that there is a small chance of them developing active TB later in life. TB was the deadliest diseases in Ireland in the late 19th and 20th centuries. TB can occur when people live in cramped conditions with poor ventilation.
During the summer, a prisoner detained in Cloverhill Prison was diagnosed with TB and after he fell ill a number of staff were checked for symptoms. Since then several members of staff have been out sick and some have been diagnosed with TB.
