Possible Elmiron Product Injury*
At Moloney & Co Solicitors we pride ourselves on providing our clients with guidance in relation to Elmiron product injury claims.
What is Elmiron?
Elmiron is an oral medication commonly used to treat pain from a bladder disorder known as interstitial cystitis. This medication forms a layer around the bladder wall, protecting it from harmful substances in the urine. Elmiron was advertised as an effective treatment for interstitial cystitis with minimal side effects to both patients and doctors. The manufacturer did not disclose that this drug could also cause vision problems and in some cases, lead to blindness.
Moloney & Co Solicitors are available to assist users of the drug Elmiron throughout Dublin, Naas, and the rest of Ireland who may have sustained injuries* or experienced significant side effects after taking this drug. We are available to provide legal advice concerning claims for medical bills, lost earnings, and pain and suffering.
6 Critical Questions About The Current Elmiron Litigation
What are the grounds for an Elmiron lawsuit?
Prior to June 16, 2020, the warning label on Elmiron did not list retina deterioration as a potential side effect. Therefore doctors could not consult their patients before prescribing the medication. Had the warning been noted, many patients may have chosen not to take it.
Does Elmiron cause retina deterioration (maculopathy)?
New studies show that people who take the interstitial cystitis drug for an extended period of time have an increased risk of developing maculopathy due to medication toxicity. They found that 22 out of 140 patients who took an average of 5,000 Elmiron pills over 15 years showed clear signs of drug toxicity, leading to retina deterioration.
Has Elmiron been recalled?
No. Elmiron was approved by the FDA in 1996 and has not been taken off the market since adverse reactions have been reported. Rheumatologists and urologists are allowed to prescribe the medication with disclosure of the potential side effects.
Have there been any Elmiron settlements yet?
Not yet, litigation is very new. Solicitors are investigating these cases from a liability and causation perspective under Irish and European law.
Who makes Elmiron?
Elmiron is made by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson & Johnson. The FDA rejected Elmiron twice before approving the medication for the treatment of interstitial cystitis.

-
