How much of our lives do we spend at work? Plenty, some might say, but like many things in life, in order to achieve our goals and to keep ourselves in the standard
We regularly receive queries from clients in respect of a wide range of issues they experience in work, ranging from pay queries to bullying and harassment issues.
The first port of call, when issues crop up in work, is to try and resolve the issues internally. This can be done informally, or formally. The informal procedure would involve simply approaching your supervisor/manager, and discussing the problem with them to see if a resolution can be reached. If the issue is not resolved using the informal approach, the next step is to raise a formal grievance.
Your contract of employment or employee handbook will usually set out the procedure to be adopted for raising a grievance with your employer and may involve notification by email or post. It is good practice to keep copies of any correspondence between you and your employer, which may become relevant at a later stage.
Conflict in the workplace can be difficult to deal with, so be sure to discuss your issues with a member of management who you trust. If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of the formal procedure, you are entitled to Appeal the decision within your workplace, and for the appeal to be heard before an alternative member of staff.
It is always best to try to reach a solution within your organisation, to ensure that your relationship with your employer, is kept on the best possible terms. Unfortunately, there are some situations which simply cannot be resolved and may require outside assistance. If you need employment law advice, please feel free to contact our offices, and a member of our team will contact you to discuss your options. To ensure that your queries are dealt with efficiently, please ensure that you have a copy of your employment contract, copies of any correspondence between you and your employer relating to the issues you are experiencing, and a brief outline of the specific issues which you are seeking advice on.
