HSA warn Mechanics about risk of injury from exposure to hazardous chemicals
The Health and Safety Authority has issued a safety warning to workers in the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry about the risk of exposure to different hazards including hazardous chemicals.
In the written safety notice the HSE warned employers to ensure that they have in place written risk assessments on hazards in place. Mechanics should be aware that hazardous substances, such as exhaust gases and fine dusts, which could cause respiratory illness can be generated during repair works.
Speaking about the risk mechanics and other motor vehicle repair workers can be exposed to in their daily work, Liam Moloney, Personal Injuries Solicitors said today ‘’Garage owners have a duty of care to their workers to ensure that they are provided with proper protective equipment for use during the course of their work. That includes providing correct safety work clothing to protect workers skin and eyes. When mechanics apply isocyanate-based products they should always be provided with appropriate air-fed breathing apparatus inside spray-booths/spray-rooms and follow clearance time’’.
Mr. Moloney continued ‘’Employers will be liable under the law of negligence and breach of duty and under the Health and Safety Acts for injuries suffered by employees if they do not provide them with a safe place of work and proper protective equipment.”
