Pfizer who are are facing thousands of lawsuits in the USA by women who allege that the Company knew about an increased risk of contracting type II Diabetes from taking its anti-cholesterol drug Lipitor are inevitably going to face similar compensation claims in Ireland as it is estimated that over 200,000 Irish Women took the drug.
Lipitor is the world’s top selling cholesterol-lowering medication with global sales of more than $130 billion since it went on the market in 1996.
Lipitor and other statins have been found to cause diabetes in post-menopausal women but have not been found to be effective in primary prevention (no family history) of heart disease in women.
In the UK and Canada Health authorities forced Pfizer to include a warning that people taking the drug had an increased risk of developing type II diabetes.
In the past number of months Court filings have shown that lawsuits by U.S. Women who alleged that Lipitor gave then type-2 diabetes have increased to 56 to over 1000.
The lawsuits have been consolidated in to a single federal Court room in South Carolina. The first case is scheduled to be tried in July 2015.
Pfizer has vigorously denied liability and has indicated that it will fight the lawsuits.
