James Borford who began taking Avandis to control his diabetes in August 2005 suffered a fatal heart attack 15 months later. He was aged 49 years and was survived by two young children.
Mr. Borford’s wife sued Avandis’s manufacturer, Smithklyne Beecham alleging the company failed to warn of the drugs risk of heart attack and stroke. She alleged that Smithklyne Beecham should have removed the drug from the market after studies showed that it had cardiovascular risks. The settlement lead to thousands of other cases being settled as well.
