Volkswagen has agreed to buy back and repair over half a million US cars which were rigged with software that allowed them to cheat official emissions tests. The settlement includes a $5,000.00 compensation payment to car owners affected and provides for some buy back of vehicles and repair work to bring the vehicles into line with emission standards in the USA.
So far, Volkswagen continues to refuse to offer compensation packages to car owners in Ireland who are affected by the emissions scandal. This is despite the fact that Volkswagen has admitted that it installed illegal software in vehicles sold in Ireland to make them capable of defeating pollution tests.
Moloney & Company Solicitors are currently advising a significant number of Irish clients affected by the scandal and are preparing litigation cases to be launched against Volkswagen Group Ireland Limited.
During emissions testing, the cars pollution control systems were turned on, curbing toxic emissions at the cost of engine performance, but on the road, those emissions controls were not fully engaged. While Volkswagen has said it will repair its cars, a technical fix is still being worked out for Irish owners.
