Since 2003, more than 150,000 Zimmer Nex Gen Flex – Knee Implants have been sold and many patients have experienced a higher than expected failure of the replacement knee within a few years of surgery. One study has reported the failure rate to be as high as 9% for the Zimmer Next Gen CR-Flex Porous Femoral component.
Background
The Zimmer Next Gen component is a non cement piece that attaches to the thigh bone. In most knee replacements systems, a type of surgical cement is used to hold the component in position.
It is suspected that the high failure rate is linked to design problems with the Zimmer Next Gen replacement knee. Several prominent surgeons want a Zimmer Next Gen knee replacement recall to be issued.
Recent study looks at 108 knee replacements using this component. The study found that 9 patients required knee revision surgery due to Zimmer Next Gen knee loosening and pain. They also found that 39 patients showed evidence of radiographic loosening knee implants which the doctors believed were not related to surgical error, approaches or patient type.
Patients have experienced the following –
- Knee replacement failure
- Loosening of replacement knees
- Other knee complications and knee pain
