Domperidone, a drug that is used to treat stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting and reflux has been linked to serious heart problems that could result in death. The drug has been licenced by the IMB for sale in Ireland but it is currently not being marketed here.
Domperidone works by increasing the action of the muscles in the gastro intestinal tract so that food moves more effectively through the digestive system. Domperidone is usedto treat conditions caused by food staying in the one place for too long or by stomach contents flowing the wrong way along the gastro intestinal tract.
Epidemiological studies have shown that Domperidone may be associated with a smaller increased risk of serious ventricular arrhythmia or sudden cardiac death. These risks may be higher in patients older than 60 years and in patients who receive daily oral doses of more than 30mg. Non- prescription Domperidone products are not recommended for use in patients with underlying cardiac disease.
In light of the evidence of a risk of serious cardiac death it is important that patients adhere to the following advice-
• Non-prescription Domperidone products are not recommended if you have current heart problems, or have ever had heart problems including heart failure, previous heart attack, chest pains or heart rhythm disorders.
• Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as irregular heartbeat or fainting while taking any Domperidone product.
